The Whitehead Family Genealogy describes the family lines of Rebecca Whitehead, the maternal great-great-grandmother of James P. Keller
Jim's grandmother, Cora Quinn, was born in Morgan County, Indiana, the daughter of Joseph Hugh Quinn and Rachel Hobson. Rachel's parents were William Hobson and Rebecca Whitehead. The Hobsons and Whiteheads came to Morgan County, Indiana from Chatham County, North Carolina in the late 1820s..

THE FAMILY HISTORY ![]()
The primary evidence for relating Rebecca Whitehead to the Whiteheads of Chatham County, North Carolina is circumstantial, but, nevertheless, compelling. Census records clearly show that she and her oldest son were born in North Carolina. The census and land records show that she lived adjacent to Nathan Whitehead in Morgan County and Archibald Whitehead's Morgan County probate records show that Rebecca, Nathan, Jacob, and Archibald Whitehead were related, most likely as siblings.
There is also ample evidence that Rebecca's husband, William Hobson, had a close tie to Rebecca Whitehead's bother, Nathan. A William Hobson was witness for the marriage of Nathan Whitehead and Betsey Moffitt in Randolph County, NC as well as witness to a number of deed transactions for Nathan Whitehead in Chatham and Randolph counties in the same period. Census, land and other records show that the Hobsons and Whiteheads were close neighbors in the northwestern corner of Chatham County adjacent to Randolph County.
Other researchers of the Chatham County Whiteheads have provided more information. Pat DeMarco has extensive information on Nathan Whitehead, Rebecca Whitehead's brother, including the original of his diary. It's a rather interesting side story about how I first met Pat DeMarco. My wife and I were visitng a Scottish Festival at the Queen Mary in Long Beach in 1995 when I spotted the Moffitt Clan booth. The gentlemen at the booth asked if I was related to the Moffitts. I said I wasn't but that an ancestor's brother married a Moffitt. A few more questions and we realized that we were 4th cousins once removed; me through Rebecca and Pat through Rebecca's brother, Nathan. Once again - a small world!
