FAMILY ANCESTRY
The Johnson Family Genealogy is one of the family lines of James P. Keller and provides information about the family and ancestors of William Fayette Johnson who was born in Allegany County, NY, lived in Pennsylvania and Covington, KY and came to Morgan County, IN in 1883. He was the father of Dorothy Lucile Johnson and grandfather of James P. Keller.
The Johnsons had land in upstate New York near Nunda, southeast of Buffalo, where they were engaged in the lumber business. William F. Johnson's father, Alonzo, went to Covington, KY before 1870 and established a prosperous lumber business there. It is supposed that he retailed the lumber that was harvested by his father and brothers in New York. For whatever reason, Alonzo moved his family from Covington to Morgan County, IN although they had no family in that area. One story is that he moved to get his gambling, drinking, dissolute son (my Grandfather!) William away from the evils of Covington and Cincinnati. Alonzo Johnson bought a large house a short distance southwest of Mooresville. The house has been restored and still stands today. It was there that William F. Johnson met and married
Cora Quinn, daughter of Joseph H. Quinn and
Rachel Hobson. William F. Johnson and his family moved to the south side of Indianapolis, near Fountain Square. He died there in 1911. His wife, Cora, remarried to John Huffman and died near the same location in 1945. The descendants of William F. Johnson's son, Robert Lee, still live in the area.
