From 28 Oct 1862 through 30 Sep 1864 he was an assistant surgeon in the 11th Michigan Infantry Regiment. He was also an active businessman in Sturgis and was President of the National Bank of Sturgis from 1884 to 1894. His father, Ira, was on the board of the bank during that period.
