Benjamin Packard, born in Massachusetts, went with his parents in the 1790's to Vermont. He was reported as a runaway with his brother, Silas, by his father in August 1808 and was described as tall, slim and apt to stammer. His father offered a one cent reward for their return. He returned later, married there and then went to upper New York state sometime before 1820. Although he is in the census of 1820 and 1830 in Allegany County, New York, he is said to have built the first brick house in Yorkshire, Cattaraugus County, New York in 1824. There is some indication that he returned to Vermont in the late 1820's near the time of the death of his first wife, Eleanor. He quit claimed to the estate of her father, Philip Royce, on 1 August 1829. After his apparent return to Castile, Allegany County, New York, he was back in Yorkshire in the mid 1830's and thereafter until his death. He was Town Clerk of Yorkshire in 1836-37 and 1841. His will is in Cattaraugus County, NY Probate 5 July 1869, vol 4, page 645.
