He married Hannah Moore. (Hannah Moore is #3766.) Hannah was born in Garvey, Ire. about 1689. Hannah died after 1724. The connection of Hannah and Robert to Henry, and James (children) is pu re speculation on the part of the author (Robert R. However there is no sol id source that shows Henry and James as children of Robert and Hannah

Henry (1722) and James (1724) are proven brothers and all their descendan ts come from reliable sources.

p. 61 .James and Henry McCausland were early settlers and among those w ho sailed from Falmouth in the fall of 1760 to Dr. Gardiner's estates at C obbeseconte or Gardinerstown. p. 62. McCausland s and Winslow s occupied the same cottage (James Winslo w, wheelwright.) The house stood exactly where Widow Esmond had a store Ab t. mid 1800's.

p. 68 James McCausland and Samuel Berry cut timber on the shore of Cabbas sa pond and hay at Brown's farm as early as 1761. p 69 Henry and James and McCausland were from Ireland and had been sever al years in America. They were brothers and received two settlers lots whi ch were part of present day Gardener, running from the River back to resid ences of Messrs. Kimball, Evans, etc. James was drowned quite early. . 13 June 1764, Henry received two lots on the east of the River, 250 acre s, which he sold 9 July 1765 to Benjamin Fitch ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SUMMARY by Leola McCaslin Roberts

To summarize it all up, as I and others who have helped to figure th is out see it. All angles point to this conclusion.

The first James McCaslin or McCausland came from Ireland to Portland, M aine in 1718. His wife has not been mentioned. He received a land grant th ere in 1720. In 172~ he bought land in Falmouth, Maine.

There was a John McCausland who married Isabel Thompson on September 1 0, 1739 in Scarborough, Maine. John was from Falmouth and he had a son Jo hn Jr, born August 12, 1740. Scarborough V.R. John and James could be brot hers and came to New England from Ireland together.

It has been recorded that the two brothers, Henry and James McCausla nd did come from Ireland. They were young when they settled in Pittston a nd Falmouth. They both owned land there. James married Mary Poor and Hen ry married Elizabeth Wyman. Both girls were from Falmouth. In 1760 Hen ry and James moved their families from Falmouth to Gardinerstown,

Having a complete list or Henry's children we do know that Alexander cou ld not be his son. Therefore he must be James and Mary Poor's son. He w as born in 1763. At the time James was living in Gardiner. There is a Jam es Jr. He is older than Alexander, also a John and a William. All of the se boys entered the Rev. War at about the same time. with Henry Jr, and An drew McCausland. "Henry's children" They gave their residence as Gardiners town, It was after the war that Alexander, John and William moved to oth er towns. These three boys could be brothers to James Jr.

It states in the history of Gardiner by Hanson that James McCausland w as drowned young. It has been proven that he and Henry owned a double s aw mill in Gardiner, and he sold land there in 1776. James and Henry we re the only two men in Gardiner by that name old enough to be Alexander 's rather at the time he enlisted.

I have found no other information on James McCausland from that dat e, or his and Alexander s death or birth certificate. He could have drown ed shortly after that date. Alexander was 13 at the time.

However this summary is my own conjecture and it may or may not be true .· I do not have the authentic records to prove my theory. There is no oth er explanation.

Henry McCausland, one of the earliest settlers , became deranged and fanci ed that the Lord had ordered him, in expiation of his sins, to make a burn t-offering of the Church, and to kill its pastor. The first part of his sacrifice he carried out on the 22nd of August 179 3. The madman lived near Farmingdale and on the appointed day, he took so me live coals in one of his children shoe and set out upon what he suppos ed to be a divine mission. He crept along the bank of the Cobbossee Stre am through the dense growth of pine-woods, until almost at the point whe re Dr. Gardiner had formerly built the "New Mill". Where he forded the wat er, and still keeping cautiously under cover of the trees, came at la st to the little wooded building that he sought. The carpenters were sti ll busy upon it, though for the moment, no one was in sight and the mania c, with his quick movements, soon buried his coals in a heap of shavings u pon the loose floor-boards, covered them with an unhung door, and vanish ed again into the forest. He had taken with him the bible used in the Chur ch, and this was afterwards found upon a stump where he had left it. The f lames, bursting forth in all directions from the little sanctuary warned t he townspeople of their loss. And the Church that had stood so bravely thr ough the Country's changes, soon fell, a heap of glowing ashes. After the success of his burnt-offering, McCausland set about the completi on of his destroying work. He made several plans to murder the Rev. Mr. Wa ren, but failing in his accomplishment decided to offer another vict um in his stead. He finally chose for the vicarious sacrifice a woman who se name was the same as that of the clergyman, the wife of Peletiah Warr en and the daughter of Solomon Tibbets. One day, as she crossed the Cobbos see on her way to visit her sick mother, he followed her in a canoe, and u nable to overtake her upon the stream, pursued her into her mother's hous e, which he entered, feigning a neighborly call. When the family were o ff their guard he seized a butcher knife that his roving eyes had descri ed in a beam overhead, and with it he dispatched Mrs. Warren in a instan t. Her dying shriek awoke her brother, who was asleep in the room, and sei zing a loaded gun, he rushed after the murderer, but he was restrained, a nd McCausland fled into the woods. It is said that he had conceived more blody plans, and that another of h is intended victimus was Mrs. Peter Grant, the grandmother of Mrs. Ann Ell is and Mr. W. W. Bradstreet. This design of slaughter, however, he did n ot follow out, but after lingering at large in the forest for some tim e, he came to a realizing sense of what he had done. Since the burini ng of St. Ann's, the congregation had met for worship in the upper sto ry of the "Great House" and there they were one day terrified by the sudd en appearance of the wild haggard murderer, who confessed his guilt and ga ve himeself up to justace. Though sentanced to be hung, he was afterwards pardoned on the ground of i nsanity, and since there was no asylum was confined in the jail at Augus ta for 36 years before his death. He was an object of curiosity to the peo ple of the neighborhood, who used to pay a penny apiece for the privile ge of "hearin Crazy McCausland pray." For the stipulated sum, he was accus tomed to appear at his cell window, a strange object with his long bear d, in those days of shaved chins and there would mumble an incoherent pray er. The money which he thus obtained he sent to his family in Pittston.

(NOTE by Robert R. McCausland) The above report is inaccurate in that Henry was never brought to tri al because he insisted he was guilty and as such he would have been execut ed; thereby making his wife and 5 children wards of the city, The frugal y ankees chose a plan of continually postponing his trial date for 36 years !! assuring themselves of a continuing income from his Revolutionary War p ension to help support his family.

Henry Jr.'s obituary that was printed in the "Kennebec Journal, August a, Maine - 21 August, 1829: DIED. In Augusta jail, on Friday last, Henry M'Causland, aged 70, wh ere he had been imprisoned for thirty-five years. In 1793 or 4. his mi nd was unsettled by a religious frenzy, and he imagined that his sins cou ld only be pardoned by his making some great sacrifice. He says the Lo rd commanded him to make a burnt offering, and a human sacrifice, and und er this delusion he murdered a woman and burned a church in Gardiner, whe re he resided. He was tried for murder, but as his insanity was apparen t, he was not sentenced. He however said there were several other wick ed persons whom he was directed to kill, and was therefore imprison ed in a solitary cell, where he has remained ever since, an object of curi osity to hundreds who have visited him, and heard from his lips the oft re peated story of his putting that 'wicked woman' to death, and burning t he church. The same singular infatuation which induced him to do the misc hief for which he was imprisoned, had possession of his mind to the d ay of his death, while on every other subject he appeared to be perfect ly rational. His stature was uncommonly large, his manner always very gra ve and thoughtful, and his long white beard, which hung down upon his brea st, gave him a venerable aspect. His room and person were always clean, a nd he appeared perfectly contented with his situation. For several yea rs he has drawn a pension from government as a soldier of the Revolutio n, a part of which has been retained by the county to defray prison expens es. Since he became an old man, Mr. Dillingham's family taught him h ow to read and write, and it is but a few years since he went through Kinn e's Arithmetic. Had he received a decent education in his youth, it is n ot improbable that his naturally vigorous mind would have exerted its reas oning powers in pursuit of truth, and his intellect never been disorder ed by fanatical excitement".
