3. William McCausland, a descendant of the Drumnakilly family, settled in Donaghanie. His father's name is supposed to have been James, but this has not been definitely proven. William was a farmer and weaver. He married a Miss Miller, and to them were born seven sons. When in the year 1798 volunteers were asked for, all seven sons enlisted in the Regiment known as the Yeomanry. The seven sons, with their father, fought and defended themselves throughout the troublesome times of '98 against the assaults of the United Party, and distinguished themselves by being one of the only two families in the surrounding locality (less one which surrendered the night before they were relieved) which held out to the last. When the house was attacked, the family stuffed ticks filled with feathers into the windows and returned the fire.On one occasion after a whole night's encounter the family found their store of bullets exhausted while their dwelling was still being fired into, and as a last resource, shotguns loaded with hobnails were used so effectually as to scatter their foes. When the relief party came, they took the rolls of the United Party and burned the houses of all whose names were found therein. The house in which William McCausland then lived still stands (1911), and is in possession of Miss Sarah Jane McCausland, having been willed to her by her father Alexander, nephew of Alexander and William, sons of William. The children all lived in Donaghanie or vicinity and engaged in farming and weaving, some of them later emigrating to America.

He helped build the Reformed Episcopal Church in Collingdale.William came to this country at the age of 9. Some 5 or 6 years later he was placed with a harness and saddle manufacturer as an apprentice. In 1885 he succeeded his employer and finally became the leading riding saddle manufacturer in Philadelphia and the eastern states. He made the first leather tree English saddle that afterwards became famous in the racing world. At his death the sons inherited the business. He was prominent in all temperance conferences and work in eastern Pennsylvania. The following is quoted from a Philadelphia newspaper in speaking of his death."He was one of the most gifted and gallant men - a man who bravely stood for civic righteousness and who nobly challenged the right of the liquor traffic to live.""McCausland, the Prohibitionist, is dead; but prohibition, the choicest flower in our public life, will spring from his grave to give fragrance and beauty to this fair State, and eternity will yet ring with the praises of those who will live in the pure atmosphere made possible by the principles of such faithful and courageous lives."The following came from an obituary that Helen V. McCausland had.William McCausland"Dared to be a Daniel, Dared to stand alone, Dared to have a purpose firm, Dared to make it known."All that was mortal of this truly courageous man was borne to its last resting place last Friday, the 19th.With William McCausland the one question was, "What is right?" When that was settled he went fearlessly forward, regardless of all opposition, all persecution, all criticism. The man who will face the world's opinions has more sublime courage than he who marches to the cannon's mouth.Wm. McCausland early in life enlisted in the fight for the cause of temperance and prohibition; first as an active Son of Temperance, then as a Good Templar. When the Prohibition Party organized he entered vigorously in its support, casting the vote for God, home and native land, though at times his would be the only vote in his precinct for the cause.William McCausland has been called home. May there be others to espouse the great principle that he advocated in his faithful, courageous life.He is a slave who dare not be in the right with two or three. He is a slave who will in silence shrink from the truth he needs must think. P.Z.S.

351. Graduate of West Chester State Normal School. Constructed crossword puzzles.Of special interest is the old Guthriesville Schoolhouse on Horseshoe Pike, now in use (1991) as the township building of East Brandywine Township in Chester County. In this two-room schoolhouse, Bertha Letitia McCausland taught the elementary school on the first floor, and Walter Thierolf taught the high school on the second floor. After many faculty meetings, they were married in her parents' home in Lyndell, just up the road.Among their pupils were quite a few McCausland nieces and nephews, including Jack, Eddie, and Eleanor McCausland and a namesake, Bertha Letitia McCausland. Alan McCausland (son of Jack) currently presides over the East Brandywine Township Board of Supervisors in the building. Also of note is the fact that a large number of John McCausland's progeny, spanning 5 generations, still reside in the Downingtown area of Chester County. The frequent occurrence of sister-brother combinations marrying other neighborhood sister-brother pairs, while unusual, is probably due to the sparse population in the area in the early days.Frances T. Her baptismal certificate has her birth date 5 Aug 1899. Her baby cup has the date 5 Aug 1893.RESOLUTION At a meeting of the Red Cross Unit of Collingdale, the following resolution on the death of Mrs. E. L. McCausland was adopted:In the sad ending of a short but beautiful self-sacrificing career, the Collingdale Unit of the Red Cross has lost a valuable and conscientious worker, Mrs. E. L. McCausland. It was she who started the surgical dressing classes in this unit and nothing was ever too much trouble, nor time too precious to devote hours to work for the boys 'over there.' Her lovable and sunny disposition made all who worked with her love and respect her, and when the sad news was heard the unit felt that a shining star had gone from its midst to shine above. She will never be forgotten but always missed. This unit extends to her family the deepest love and sympathy in this their hour of sorrow.Signed: Committee.
