Duncan was the Keeper of an Inn.
From George F. Daniel's 1892 "History of the Town of Oxford, Massachusetts: Duncan Campbell "settled opposite the North Common, where he built the house now standing, and was innkeeper and trader. Before 1754 he began building the mansion at the South Common, which he sold unfinished that year to his brother-in-law, Josiah Wolcott. He appears to have been unsettled in his business relations, removed often , was prominent in public affairs, justice of the peace, collector under the excise law, and many years licensed retailer of liquors. He lived in Dudley from 1766 to 1770 and removed thence to the north part of Oxford, now Auburn, and was 1785-1787 in Worcester, where he kept a Tavern, and later at Putney, Vt., where he was a farmer. He spent his latter days in Oxford. On 13 June 1795, as he was crossing from the centre tavern to his residence on the opposite corner he was taken suddenly ill, fell in the street and soon died. Joseph Hurd was administrator of his estate." Duncan Campbell appears in the 1790 census for Putney, Windham Co, VT, so must have returned to Oxford shortly before his death there. His sons John, Thomas and Alexander also went to Putney, VT. His son Archibald went to Putney, but later returned to Oxford. His son Samuel moved to Chelsea and, later, to Montpelier, VT.
